What’s in a name (for this blog)?

My initial inspiration for doing a post every day on my blog came from Fred Wilson’s blog over at avc.com. Amazingly, he’s already done 5,000 posts. Yes, 5,000. This post is actually my 365th post, and I’m feeling pretty good about things. One area that I’m still working on is the name for this blog.

Here are some names I’ve used:

  • Entrepreneur Musings — not sure it is specific enough
  • B2B Tech Entrepreneur — possibly too generic
  • Startup Stammer — not a positive connotation with stammer although I do like the alliteration
  • 10,000 Startup Hours — the current title, which comes from the Malcom Gladwell book Outliers and is the idea that it takes 10,000 hours to become good at something

My goal with the name is to be unique and memorable but also pretty relevant, whenever possible.

What do you think of the new name? What are some blog names you like?

I like the 10,000 hours, why not make it simple:

    Ten Thousand Hours

(spell it out instead of using numbers?)

I really like the current name. And, I read it daily! Thanks!

It’s a daily read for me David. Great content!

The name is fine. The tagline I take issue with however.

I also like 10,000 hours because its so versatile.

I went through a similar decision with my blog. On that blog I talk mostly about digital marketing and startups. I ended up naming it Begin the Begin, for several reasons.

First, it has a connection with me as its the name of my favorite REM song (my favorite band).

For startups, it’s a call to action. A rallying cry if you will. It means, “stop talking about what you’re going to do and just do it!”.

For digital marketers, one of the main themes I hit on is the need to try new technology, test, experiment, push bounds, etc. You can’t just talk about it, you have to live it.

I also think that name can come with me whichever direction I take my blog.

PS – I’m still waiting for you to put disqus on this blog as your commenting system. Fred would be proud 😉

Congrats on your 365th post David. I like the name Startup Slingshots or something similar. It reverbs a David vs Goliath theme (startup vs big company) and resonates with Shotput.

Thanks guys! It sounds like 10,000 hours resonates and makes sense. I like it as well.

Jeff – I’d love to put Disqus comments in but then I’d have to switch off wordpress.com hosting, which is more of a time thing than anything else.
