When Does the Millennial Workplace and Culture Become Standard

Earlier today I was talking to a colleague about the environment at the Atlanta Tech Village and how it was the ideal place for Millennials. It’s not that we’re anti-establishment, but more so that we’re working on creating the best environment possible for how we want to work.

Here are a few characteristics of the modern Millennial workplace and culture:

  • Creative and collaborative rooms, open spaces, and multiple work options (less private space and more communal space)
  • Tools to work whenever, wherever (thanks to the cloud and mobile technology)
  • Strong transparency and openness
  • Results only work environment
  • Focus on autonomy, mastery, and purpose

Now, we’re likely in the first inning of this type of environment becoming more commonplace, but it’s going to happen.

    I think it is incredibly industry specific. Having come from a banking/accounting background I do not see them embracing millennial workplaces anytime soon. However having transitioned into the small business development field currently I see many trends in this direction. I think the more competitive/dependent on innovation a given industry is the more likely it is to adapt a millennial type workplace of collaboration.

    David, I’m officing at ATV and coming to the Tech Exec Roundtable Tuesday night to hear more of your vision. I love the heart of this post. You guys are doing a great job at ATV.

    We’re riding the same wave with Meals With A Mission – transforming workplace giving and community support to meet the ways Gen Y, now the largest segment of the workforce, looks to make their social impact.

    Fundamental changes are afoot everywhere. The “people” generations play a role in this, but the systems and models themselves have a generational life-cycle too. We’re coming to the end of the efficacy of some things that have driven society for decades. The transitions can be rough, but the innovation and tools being developed right now, I think give us great reason to be excited about the future. See you Tuesday!

    Great things happen when you put several smart and driven people in a room.

    I am currently working at ATV and previously worked at Capital Factory in Austin.The people who were working in open spaces hardly collaborated or bounced ideas off each other. There was always fear of creating noise and disturbing other people in the communal area.

    Majority of collaboration and idea exchange happened in following two spaces.

    a) In the kitchen. Capital factory has an awesome kitchen . Long tables, great counter tops, lots of sitting place. Great Coffee. Everybody wanted to hangout in the kitchen. Product presentations/pitches major networking events all happened in the kitchen.

    b) In a room wherein 4-5 people randomly congregated.

    ATV’s kitchen is greatly inadequate in my opinion. We should build a huge kitchen with lots of sitting place. Believe me people love collaborating around a kitchen table.
